The saying, "It runs in the family" certainly applies to
Tom Novell. He grew up listening to his father, Mel
Novell, a very talented clarinetist, jam with friends on
Dixieland, old standards and gospel.  At age 6 Tom
began taking piano lessons and by age 12 was playing
gigs with his dad's band in nursing homes and at church.
"My father was a big influence on me musically," Tom
stated.  "He introduced me to swing, dixieland and
taught me to ad-lib. I learned a lot of cool chords playing
dixieland and swing."
At 7 years of age Tom began playing the flute and in
High School was a member of the Marching Band and
Concert Band.  When his skills at the piano became
known, he was chosen to accompany the school's
vocalists at yearly state music competitions. Upon
graduation, he was named "Most Talented Senior" by the
student body.
Tom majored in piano at Southeast Missouri State
University, where he also played flute in the Marching
Band and percussion in the Symphonic Band.  He was
also a member of "The Inn Group", a band led by one of
his music professors, playing clubs, private parties and
major hotels.
Since college Tom has played with the Jimmy Queen
Band, and has been the primary pianist at his church.  He
has also performed with special groups, soloists and
been featured at associational events.  Tom joined
Crossover in 2006.  "I am honored to be part of such a
talented group of people," Tom said. "I love being part
of a group committed to doing music the best we can,
where egos are low and expectations are high."
Tom is married to Bobbi Novell who also plays
keyboards in Crossover. He has one daughter and one
son.
